João Diogo Manteigas, who ran against Rui Costa in last year's elections, has publicly challenged Sport Lisboa e Benfica to host one of its upcoming General Assemblies outside of Lisbon. Manteigas, speaking as a club member, emphasized the importance of these meetings for the club's future and suggested the Minho region as a potential venue to demonstrate the widespread support for Benfica across Portugal.

Manteigas highlighted two crucial General Assemblies scheduled for June, with convocations expected in May. The first assembly is dedicated exclusively to reviewing Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 2025/26 sporting season, promising a thorough and serious debate. The second will focus on the traditional Budget and Activity Plan for the 2026/27 season.

The former candidate expressed a desire for the President of the General Assembly to convene one of these vital meetings away from the capital. He specifically proposed the Minho region, known for its strong Benfica fanbase, as a starting point. Manteigas believes this move would effectively showcase the deep-rooted 'benfiquismo' – the spirit of Benfica support – that exists throughout the entire country.

Beyond the administrative matters, João Diogo Manteigas also addressed Sport Lisboa e Benfica's current sporting performance. He acknowledged that the season has not unfolded as ideally as desired by fans and the club. Despite the challenges, Manteigas maintained a hopeful outlook for the remainder of the campaign.

Manteigas pointed to three remaining 'finals' that he believes will lead Sport Lisboa e Benfica to its rightful place: the Champions League. He passionately asserted that Benfica's history and DNA are intrinsically linked to Europe's premier club competition. He concluded by reaffirming unwavering support for the club, stating, 'Whenever Benfica needs it, we will always be there. Viva o Sport Lisboa e Benfica!'
